Divorced, I Married A Godfather

Divorced, I Married A Godfather

So, let me tell you about the time I got divorced and then, completely by accident, married a Godfather. No, not the Marlon Brando kind. Think more… local legend. Think the guy who gets a deferential nod at every Italian restaurant in town. Yeah, that kind.

My first marriage? A total snooze-fest. We were both accountants. We argued about variable interest rates. The most dangerous thing he did was forget to separate the recycling. Thrilling, right? I left him for a life with, well, more spice.

I met “Gio” at a farmers market. He was buying two dozen artichokes and a suspiciously large amount of basil. I thought, “Wow, a man who cooks!” Turns out, yes. He cooks. He also “handles” people who forget to pay their “protection insurance.” Oops.

The First Red Flag

Our third date. He takes me to a beautiful rooftop restaurant. Every single waiter, from the busboy to the sommelier, greets him by name. They also all back away slowly. I joked, “Are you the mayor?” He just smiled and said, “I’m the King of a small neighborhood.” Very humble. Very terrifying.

Then the check comes. He writes a note on the napkin instead of a tip. The waiter reads it, goes pale, and we never see the bill. I asked what the note said. Gio winked. “Just a friendly reminder about his mother’s health insurance.” Charming.

The Proposal (And The Pension)

He proposed with a ring way too big for my finger. “It’s a family heirloom,” he said. Probably once belonged to a man who “disappeared.” I said yes, because the butterflies in my stomach were actually pure adrenaline. Who needs romance when you have suspense?

My family was thrilled. My dad asked if Gio could maybe “talk to” his boss about a promotion. My mom asked if he could get our neighbor’s barking dog to “find a new home.” I realized I wasn’t just getting a husband. I was getting a small-scale criminal enterprise.

But here’s the kicker. Gio is incredibly good at planning. Our wedding? Flawless. No drunk uncle causing a scene. No one wearing white except the bride. Because someone definitely got a “friendly chat” in the parking lot beforehand. It was efficient!

The Daily Grind (Literally)

Living with him is a trip. I’ll ask him to take out the trash. He’ll say, “Sure, but first I have to make a stop at the junkyard to “inspect” a shipment.” I clean the guns while he cuts the vegetables for dinner. It’s our little routine. Domestic bliss with a side of plausible deniability.

He calls his business a “consulting firm.” Which, technically, is true. He consults with people on how to not get their car tires slashed. He’s a people person, in the most literal sense. He knows everyone’s name and their deepest, darkest secrets.

Holidays are a blast. His giant, scary “associates” come over. They bring cannoli and talk about “taking care of things.” They always bring the best wine. Nobody tries to start a political argument. Because nobody wants to wake up with a horse head in their bed. Is that a joke? I’m not sure anymore.

The Pros and Cons List

Pro: I never have to worry about parking tickets. Con: He “fixes” parking tickets by finding the officer who wrote it. Pro: We always get the best table at any restaurant. Con: The “owner” usually pays for it. Guilt by association is a real thing, you guys.

Do I worry he’ll get arrested? Every single day. But then he comes home, kisses my forehead, and says, “Don’t worry, the paperwork is solid. Think of it as a creative business structure.” I don’t know what that means, and I’m not sure I want to.

My ex-husband used to hide his credit card statements. Gio hides people. It’s a different level of relationship trust. You have to be okay with never asking, “So, where were you last night?” because the answer might be “Miami. Donating to a politician’s campaign.”

So, Am I Happy?

Look. Is it perfect? No. I still get annoyed when he uses my good kitchen knives to pry open a crate of “imported olive oil.” But I am never bored. My life went from beige to blood red. I traded spreadsheets for leverage.

My friends at book club are terrified of me now. They ask, “Is everything okay?” I say, “Fine, my husband just made a very generous offer to our noisy neighbors to move.” They laugh nervously. I don’t.

So yeah. I married a Godfather. He’s loving, he’s loyal, and he has a very unique way of saying “I love you.” Usually involving a heavy bag of cash and a whispered threat about the postman’s pension. Would I trade it for the quiet life of an accountant again? Never. As long as he stays out of my pasta garden, we’re good.
