Who's Going In The Jungle This Year

Who's Going In The Jungle This Year

Remember last summer when my friend Dave announced he was “embracing the wild” and spent a fortune on a bright orange tactical backpack? He showed up at the cookout looking like he was about to single-handedly survive a zombie apocalypse. Two weeks later, I saw that same backpack gathering dust on his porch, still smelling like new plastic. Dave never even left his backyard. He got scared of the mosquitoes.

That’s the thing about the jungle, isn’t it? It’s not just a place on a map—it’s a vibe, a test of will, and apparently, a very expensive way to get a sunburn. So, I have to ask: who’s actually going in the jungle this year?

The “Influencer” Explorer

You know the type. They’ve got a handheld fan, a matching athleisure set, and a GoPro strapped to their chest like a third lung. They’re not looking for adventure—they’re looking for the perfect golden-hour shot under a canopy of leaves. “Oh my god, this moss is so aesthetic!”

They’ll post a selfie with a howler monkey in the background, but you just know they’re sleeping at a five-star eco-lodge with air conditioning. Let’s be honest: the only thing they’re conquering is their Instagram follower count. But hey, if it gets them outside for ten minutes, I’m not mad about it. Just please, please put the phone down before you step on a snake.

The “Survivalist” Gearhead

This is Dave’s spiritual cousin. They own a ferro rod, a water filter that costs more than my rent, and a knife they’ve named “Gloria.” They’ve watched every episode of Alone and can identify edible roots from a moving car. Yet, they still panic when a spider the size of a quarter crawls past their sleeping bag.

They’ll tell you they’re “going in” to test their limits. Really, they’re just testing their credit card limit on a luxury camping (glamping) setup. The irony is delicious. If the jungle had a WiFi signal, they’d never leave their tent. But you have to respect the enthusiasm—even if they pack three different types of fire starters but forget the bug spray.

The Quiet Loner (That’s Probably Me)

Then there’s the person who just wants to be there. No drone, no manifesto, no matching hat. They bring a hammock, a book, and a bag of trail mix. They’re not trying to prove anything to anyone—least of all to the capuchin monkeys judging their life choices from a branch above.

This person knows the jungle doesn’t care about your gear or your followers. It only cares if you brought enough water and if your boots are broken in. They’re the ones who come back with muddy knees and a weirdly peaceful smile. Honestly? They’re the ones I’d trust to lead a rescue mission. Or at least to find the nearest snack shack.

The “Collector” of Experiences

You’ll spot them with a journal, sketching orchids and noting down bird calls. They’re genuine—but they also have a weird habit of treating the jungle like a checklist. “Got the toucan sighting, checked. Saw a flying fox, check. Got mildly poisoned by a leaf, check—ow.”

They love the immersion, but they’re secretly obsessed with the stats. They’ll tell you at the hostel bar: “Yeah, I did the Dawn Walk. Saw three types of tarantulas. And I only screamed once.” It’s endearing, honestly. They treat the jungle like a video game with a combo system. And sometimes, they win.

The Accidental Tourist

And finally, my personal favorite: the person who did not mean to be here. They booked a wrong bus, took a wrong turn, or followed a friendly local who said “shortcut” without a shred of honesty. Now they’re standing in the middle of a rainforest, wearing flip-flops and carrying a single bottle of warm soda.

They look like a deer in headlights—or a deer in a jungle, I suppose. But these are the people who have the best stories. They didn’t plan for magic; they stumbled into it. They’ll recount how a guide saved them from a river crossing, or how a stranger shared a mango. That’s the real jungle spirit. Not the gear, not the grid, but the moment you realize you have no idea what’s coming next.

So, who’s going in the jungle this year? Everyone, apparently. The gearheads, the dreamers, the clueless, and the brave. The jungle doesn’t care why you came—it just welcomes you, sweaty and confused, into its green chaos. Just don’t be like Dave. Leave the tactical backpack at home. Pack extra socks, a sense of humor, and maybe some antihistamine. You’ll need it.
