Whitehall Garden Centre Corsham Road Lacock Chippenham
So, there I was, wandering around Lacock like a tourist on a Sunday stroll, when I stumbled upon this little gem hidden away on Corsham Road. I mean, who would've thought that behind those unassuming gates lay a gardener's paradise? That's right, I'm talking about Whitehall Garden Centre, the place that's been keeping Chippenham's green thumbs happy for ages.
Now, I'm not one to toot my own horn, but I like to think I've got a bit of a green thumb myself. I mean, I've managed to keep my indoor plants alive for more than a week, so that's something, right? But even with my limited gardening prowess, I could see that Whitehall was something special.
More than Just a Garden Centre
I mean, sure, it's got all the usual suspects - plants, plants, and more plants. But it's also got this really lovely café, The Greenhouse, where they serve up some seriously delicious cakes. I mean, I'm not saying I'd go there just for the cake (okay, maybe I would), but it's a nice bonus.

And then there's the fact that they've got this amazing selection of garden ornaments and furniture. I mean, who doesn't want a giant flamingo to liven up their garden? (Don't answer that, I'm pretty sure it's just me.)
But What's the Deal with the Name?
Now, I've got to admit, I was a bit confused when I first heard the name. I mean, Whitehall? Isn't that where all the political types hang out in London? Turns out, it's actually named after the Whitehall estate that used to be in the area. Who knew, right?
Anyway, enough about me and my naming trivia. Let's get back to the garden centre. One of the things I really liked about Whitehall was the staff. I mean, these guys really know their stuff. I was wandering around, asking all sorts of ridiculous questions (did you know there's a plant called a 'Mother-in-Law's Tongue'? I mean, who names these things?), and they were all super helpful and patient.
More Than Just a Pretty Face
But Whitehall isn't just about the looks, you know. They've also got this really great initiative where they grow a lot of their plants on-site. I mean, I'm all for supporting local businesses, but it's also just really cool to think that the plants you're buying were grown right there. Plus, it's good for the environment, which is always a bonus.

And speaking of environment, Whitehall also does this thing where they recycle all their plant pots and trays. I mean, it's not the most exciting thing in the world, but it's nice to know that they're doing their bit for the planet, right?
So, Should You Go?
Look, I'm not going to lie to you, dear reader. Whitehall Garden Centre isn't exactly the most exciting place on the planet. I mean, it's a garden centre, not a theme park. But if you're into gardening, or even if you're just looking for a nice place to spend a few hours on a sunny day, it's definitely worth a visit.
Plus, they've got that cake. I mean, come on, that's reason enough right there.
So, if you're in the Chippenham area and you find yourself with a few hours to kill, why not pop by Whitehall Garden Centre? You might just find that it's your new favourite place. And who knows, you might even learn a thing or two about gardening. (Just don't ask me about the 'Mother-in-Law's Tongue', I still haven't figured that one out.)
